1 Character Creation

For someone new to the Ranger class character creation can sometimes seem confusing and a little bit daunting.  Which race to choose and where stats should be placed can be a little confusing, but it doesn’t need to be.

1.a Race

Aspiring young Rangers can pick from one of four different races.  Those races are, Shar, Celt, Elf and Lurikeen.  Each race has its own pluses and minuses in the form of base stats and innate racial resistances to different types of damage.  Which race you pick can just as easily be decided based on stats, or on the look of your character.  Thankfully, there is no wrong choice.  In the end as long as you have a decent template the choice you make now won’t critically damage your character.

Table 1.2

1.b Important stats and what they do

The most important stats for a Ranger in order of importance are:
Dexterity – The higher your dex the more damage will be done with your bow, and allow you to fire shots more quickly.  Dex also affects the amount of attacks that will be evaded.  Dex also plays a part in pierce damage and defense penetration, but we will get into that later.
Strength – Strength affects damage and defense penetration for melee styles whether using blades or pierce.  We will get into the exact effect later on when discussion melee specializations.
Con – The higher your con the more hit points you will have.  Hit points directly affect how long you are able to survive against an attack, so this will always be important.  The exact affect changes based on Champ Level, but at Champ Level 0 you will gain about 3.5 hits per point of con.  At Champ Level 10 you will gain 4.25 hits per point of con.  It doesn’t sound like much, but it starts to add up as you get to level 50 and can have 101 con in your template.
Quickness – Has some affect on the amount you will evade, and also affects the speed with which you will swing your weapons.  The effect quickness has one weaponspeed caps at 250.  And despite urban legend, quickness has no effect on how quickly you will run in game.

In table 1.1 you will see the starting stats for all four available races, and three stats in a blue font.  These are known as the rising stats for the Ranger class.  Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary tells you that every first, second, or third level you will get a point in one of those stats.  This means, every level you will get a point in dexterity, every other level a point in quickness, and every third level a point in strength.

When starting out you will have 30 points that can be spent in any one or multiple different stats.  After the first 10 points are placed into a unique stat however there will be diminishing returns.  For example, you can place 10 points in str, con and dex, but you due to diminishing returns you can only do 15 dex and 10 con or 15 dex and 10 str, etc.

Generally it is best to start off with 10 points in, dex, con and strength.  However, if you decide to play a Shar you may want to put points in quickness so it will be easier to cap later on, or 15 points in dex to make up for the lower starting dex.  Similarly, as a Lurikeen you may want to start with 15 strength 10 con to make up for the lower starting stats.  There are many play styles available to the Ranger class, as long as you stick with the important stats you cannot go wrong.  But even if you do, for instance accidentally put points into intelligence, you can change these at anytime from the character creation screen.  Do not be afraid to play around with these stats until you find what suits your individual playstyle.
